Vehicle licence fee checker
Each province sets its own licence disc fees, so the same car costs different amounts depending on where it's registered. We look up what your province charges by law, then show separately what anyone else charges you on top.
Your entries stay only in this tab.
What you pay depends on what your vehicle weighs empty (its tare), not loaded. We cover vehicles up to 3 500 kg — the province does publish fees for heavier ones, we just don't list them yet.
From 01 Jul 2026, until the province publishes a new one · VAT not stated by the publisherOther provinces — fees not checked yet
Why 5 provinces are not checked yet
- Eastern Cape: We haven't found a current official fee schedule.
- Free State: The official fee list is old, and newer lists disagree.
- Gauteng: The new fees are still a draft, not a final schedule.
- KwaZulu-Natal: We haven't been able to confirm the current official fees.
- North West: The available official fee schedules disagree.
If your province is listed here, ask your local licensing office for its current fee before paying. The government renewal guide explains where and how to renew.
If your disc has expired
You have 21 days from the expiry date to renew without extra costs. After that, late penalties and arrears apply. We don't estimate those amounts because they depend on your own renewal.
What to take to the counter
Take your ID, proof of address and your MVL2 renewal notice. If you didn't receive the notice, complete an ALV application form. The official guide lists extra address documents for informal settlements and separate documents for organisations.
Where you can renew in Western Cape
- In person
Renew at your local licensing office (the registering authority). Always available, wherever you live. If nothing else works, this does.
- Post Office
Renew in person at a selected Post Office branch. Only some Post Office branches handle this, not all of them. Phone your nearest branch before you make the trip.
- Online, through NaTIS (the national vehicle system)
Renew and pay for a vehicle licence disc online via the national NaTIS platform. Government's own NaTIS service is available countrywide. Delivery is charged separately.
- Online, through your municipality
Pay vehicle licence fees online via EFT through the City of Cape Town's own portal. For the City of Cape Town only — not the rest of the Western Cape.
What NaTIS online delivery can add
The national regulations set these delivery fees separately from the licence fee and the R 72 transaction fee. The NaTIS checkout decides which options it offers for your renewal.

What others charge to do it for you
You don't have to use any of these. If you do, what they charge comes on top of the fee above — you still pay government the same amount.
- Automobile Association of South Africa (AA)
R 220 a year · VAT not stated by the publisher · What the AA charges to handle the renewal for you: reminders, paperwork and delivery within four working days, for up to four vehicles due at the same time. The licence fee itself is separate and you still pay it. You can also pay this monthly instead.
