Where this comes from, and what it doesn't cover eThekwini Municipality, Tariff Tables 2026/2027 (Technical Services: Energy Management — Electricity, p.224), adopted 29 May 2026 (PDF) . This checks the plan named above and nothing else. Other household plans — including low-income or free-basic plans (often called indigent or Lifeline) and Cape Town's Home User plan — use different rates. So does electricity bought straight from Eskom.
This plan has one flat unit rate, so earlier purchases don't change this comparison.
This checker only compares with the selected municipality's own tariff. If you buy from a landlord, body corporate or private meter company, that provider may set the rate and deductions, so this comparison won't reproduce the token.
A difference doesn't mean anyone cheated you. It usually comes down to one of these:
The shop or app took a small fee before turning the rest into units. Money you already owed was taken off this purchase. Ordinary rounding on the token. You're on a different plan from the one picked above. Your landlord, body corporate or private meter provider uses its own rate or deductions. If none of those fit and the gap is big, check the tariff and supplier on the slip, then contact that supplier with the slip and meter number. For Eskom-direct supply, use Eskom's residential tariff information . If you may qualify for free basic electricity or other low-income support (often called an indigent tariff), check how free basic services work and contact your municipality about its application rules.
